In about 900 AD the Viking leader Malahulc set sail from Romsdal in Norway, with his nephew Hralf. They fought the french and conquered Normandy in 912 AD.
Hralf became Rollo the 1st Duke of Normandy.

In 1045 descendants of Malahulc later settled in the area of Aubigne in Brittany.
Over the centuries the family name has evolved from d'Aubigne to Daubeney.
William d'Aubigne was a close companion of William, 7th Duke of Normandy - better known after the invasion of England in 1066 as 'The Conqueror' - King William 1st of England.
